OSMOSYS

OSMOSYS was invented by a REEFLINE design to create high quality reverse osmosis systems dedicated to the world of aquarium devotees. Thanks to an accurate selection of producers of individual components and to the accrued experience in the aquarium sector, the OSMOSYS systems were born. The assembly of each individual system is done in Italy. All the components used have been NSF (www.nsf.org) and WQA (www.wqa.org) certified, quality synonyms for the products used.

WHAT IS REVERSE OSMOSIS SYSTEM?

It is simply equipment for separating water. Water under pressure is pushed towards a semi-permeable membrane. The pores of the membrane are large enough to allow the passage of water molecules, but not other, larger molecules (dissolved solids). An OSMOSYS reverse osmosis system with its helpful de-ionizing stage will give you incredibly pure water for your aquarium.

“Reverse osmosis (RO) is a filtration method that removes many types of large molecules and ions from solutions by applying pressure to the solution when it is on one side of a selective membrane. The result is that the solute is retained on the pressurized side of the membrane and the pure solvent is allowed to pass to the other side. To be "selective," this membrane should not allow large molecules or ions through the pores (holes), but should allow smaller components of the solution (such as the solvent) to pass freely. Reverse osmosis is most commonly known for its use in drinking water purification from seawater, removing the salt and other substances from the water molecules. This is the reverse of the normal osmosis process, in which the solvent naturally moves from an area of low solute concentration, through a membrane, to an area of high solute concentration. The movement of a pure solvent to equalize solute concentrations on each side of a membrane generates a pressure and this is the "osmotic pressure." Applying an external pressure to reverse the natural flow of pure solvent, thus, is reverse osmosis. The process is similar to membrane filtration. However, there are key differences between reverse osmosis and filtration. The predominant removal mechanism in membrane filtration is straining, or size exclusion, so the process can theoretically achieve perfect exclusion of particles regardless of operational parameters such as influent pressure and concentration. Reverse osmosis, however involves a diffusive mechanism so that separation efficiency is dependent on solute concentration, pressure and water flux rate. Many reef aquarium keepers use reverse osmosis systems for their artificial mixture of seawater. Ordinary tap water can often contain excessive chlorine, chloramines, copper, nitrogen, phosphates, silicates, or many other chemicals detrimental to the sensitive organisms in a reef environment. Contaminants such as nitrogen compounds and phosphates can lead to excessive, and unwanted, algae growth. An effective combination of both reverse osmosis and deionization (RO/DI) is the most popular among reef aquarium keepers, and is preferred above other water purification processes due to the low cost of ownership and minimal operating costs. Where chlorine and chloramines are found in the water, carbon filtration is needed before the membrane, as the common residential membrane used by reef keepers does not cope with these compounds.” Description by WIKIPEDIA.

COMPOSITION OF REVERSE OSMOSIS SYSTEM

The membrane is the heart of the system, and it needs to be protected. This function is entrusted to the pre-filters. Depending on your system’s model, OSMOSYS will have more pre-filters, membrane and de-ionizing filter.

SEDIMENT FILTER:

The sediment filter is made from 100% PP to guarantee a vast compatibility of treatable liquids. They have the function of capturing the sediments that can be contained in drinking water, such as sand, dirt, rust, etc. The sediment filters used in the OSMOSYS systems have a patented technology of multi-layers; the PP filter is made of 4 different layers: the larger fibres on the external side and finer fibres on the internal side. This design has a high capacity for holding the polluting agents, and consequently the filter is active longer and with a lower loss of pressure. All the filters are NSF24 certified. Moreover, they prolong the life of the active carbon cartridge, eliminating heavy pollutants that would otherwise clog the active carbon, reducing the available area for absorption.

CARBON FILTER (CTO and GAC):

The carbon filter is made from active carbon from coconut, and it is mainly used to remove/reduce chlorine, weed-killers, heavy metals, volatile organic compost, pesticides, odours and other contaminants which could be found in drinking water. It is produced according to FDA specifications and is NSF24 certified. In addition, the carbon filter can mechanically remove the particles larger than 5 microns. We advise cleaning the filter at least 5 minutes before using the osmosis system.

THE MEMBRANE:

The membrane is the heart of the reverse osmosis system. This removes from 92 to 98% of the total dissolved solids (TDS), bacteria, ions and micro particles, according to the membrane production itself. As it is the most important component in the system, its quality is of fundamental importance: OSMOSYS uses exclusively FILMTEC membranes by DOW CHEMICAL, universally recognised as the best.

DE-IONIZED RESINS:

The DI filter (de-ionizing) is the last step of the OSMOSYS system, when the water cleaned by the membrane is made to pass one last time for a greater degree of purity. It is made of a mixed bed ion exchange resin. It is made from a polymeric matrix (in general granules of few millimetres in diameter) in which ions, available for the ion exchange, are entrapped and absorbed. There are numerous resins, and the ion exchange resins used in the OSMOSYS systems are made from a styrene Copolymer and functionalizing divinylbenzene in the H-OH-H / OH form produced by DOW CHEMICAL. The main function is to almost totally reduce the total dissolved solid residue to reach a water conductibility equal to 0.1 micro-siemens, a perfectly de-mineralized water. These resins are also used in chemical laboratories for their production of extremely pure water.

INCLUDED ACCESSORIES

The OSMOSYS systems have been designed to guarantee the highest quality to all aquarium devotees.

Every system comes equipped with the following accessories already installed:

Pressure Gauge: pressure indicator with double Bar/PSI scale to verify constantly the internal pressure of the RO system, mounted on a special fitting at the membrane entrance.
Fittings: all fittings used are of the ¼ “Push-in” type, NSF certified and attached with a sealing adhesive to connect the plastic threads for alimentary use (Loctite 5331).
Flush Kit: installed in the flow reducer, this system helps prolong the life of the osmosis system membrane. By using this system it is possible to remove the eventual micro-sediments that could be deposited on the external surface of the membrane.
TDS DM-1: This TDS meter can monitor two different lines of water, the IN line of the net water and the OUT line of filtered water. The TDS meter DM-1 is the ideal instrument for knowing if the filters or the membrane are functioning properly. (Only with the SYS 03 and SYS 04 models.)
